L'intento era di comporre un vasto poema sulla storia d'Italia (Storia nostra, appunto) dalla fondazione di Roma all'unità. L'episodio che qui viene presentato e letto da Carlo Colognese riguarda la vicenda dei giovani carbonari Targhini e Montanari, messi a morte in nome del Papa re a Roma in Piazza del Popolo.
